LPN and LVN Interview Questions and Sample Answers

A practical nursing interview often comes down to how you handle a busy assignment, communicate a change and work within the role your employer describes. In long-term care, bring an example that shows how you noticed a change from a resident’s usual routine.

1. How do you manage interruptions on a busy shift?

Explain how you separate urgent concerns from requests you can return to. Include how you keep track of unfinished work.

Sample answer

I check whether the new request needs immediate attention and let the team know when I have to pause a task. I keep a short list of open items and review it before handoff.

2. Tell me about a change you noticed in a resident.

Describe the difference from baseline in observable terms and explain who received the update.

Sample answer

A resident who normally joined a morning activity chose to stay in their room and was quieter than usual. I told the supervising nurse what I had observed and when it started. I checked back to make sure the update reached the incoming shift.

3. How do you respond to a request outside your assignment or scope?

Name the specific uncertainty and how you verify the next step.

Sample answer

I clarify what is being requested and check with the supervising nurse if the task or responsibility is unclear. I make sure the request reaches someone who can take it on and tell the team where it stands.

4. How would you respond to a family member upset about a delay?

Acknowledge the concern, check what information you can share and give a clear follow-up.

Sample answer

I would ask what update they were waiting for, verify what I could share and identify who could answer the remaining question. I would tell them when I planned to follow up.

Practice an end-of-shift update

Imagine the incoming nurse has never met the resident. Give a brief baseline, describe what changed and say what has already been reported. Finish with the one open issue the incoming team needs to know about. If you only observed a similar event during training, name the part you personally handled.
