CNA interview guide

CNA Interview Questions and Sample Answers

A CNA interview gives you room to show reliability, respect for residents and clear communication with the nurse. If this is your first job, use an example from training, volunteering or another workplace and be explicit about where it happened.

1. Why do you want to work as a CNA?

Name something specific about direct care and the kind of workplace you are looking for.

Sample answer

During training I liked helping residents keep control over small parts of their day. I learned that explaining what I was doing and asking about their preferences could make routine care feel less rushed.

2. What would you do if a resident refused help?

Show how you respect the person, check the reason and update the nurse.

Sample answer

I’d ask if they were uncomfortable or wanted to try later. I would respect their decision, tell the nurse what happened and follow the team’s plan for checking back.

3. What would you report if someone seemed different from usual?

Describe the change in concrete terms rather than trying to diagnose it.

Sample answer

I would tell the nurse what I saw, when it started and how it differed from earlier. I would make sure I reached the appropriate person promptly and confirm any next steps I was asked to take.

4. How do you protect dignity during personal care?

Explain the small actions you take before and during the task.

Sample answer

I explain what I’m there to help with, ask what the person prefers and keep them covered as much as possible. I also give them time to do what they can independently.

Turn a training example into a strong answer

Think of one resident interaction from training that went differently from what you expected. What did the person ask for? How did you adapt within your role? What did you report to the nurse or instructor? Keep your answer to about a minute and use the actual words you’d use to report the change.
