Staff Nurse Interview Questions and Sample Answers
Staff nurse interviews are often about the work between handoff and handoff. Prepare examples that show how you organize an assignment, adapt when it changes and leave the next shift with a clear picture of what remains open.
1. How do you organize the start of a shift?
Explain how you use handoff to identify immediate concerns and coordinate the rest of the assignment.
Sample answerI start by identifying time-sensitive items and open questions from handoff. I clarify what needs attention first and review the rest of the workload so I can communicate early if something needs to move.
2. Tell me about a late admission or transfer.
Show how you clarified the handoff and adjusted responsibilities without losing open tasks.
Sample answerI asked the charge nurse what would need to be reassigned, confirmed who would complete the pending work and clarified the arrival plan with the sending team. I used the next huddle to check what was still open.
3. How do you help a colleague on a busy shift?
Describe how you offer specific support and check that your own assignment stays covered.
Sample answerI ask what would help most and offer a task I can take on. Before stepping away from my assignment, I communicate what I am doing and confirm who can reach me if a priority changes.
4. What makes a handoff complete?
Include open issues and the person responsible for each next step.
Sample answerI lead with what has changed, then cover what is pending and what needs watching. I confirm ownership of the unfinished work and invite the receiving nurse to flag anything unclear.
Walk through a shift that changed halfway through
Sketch your original priorities, the event that disrupted them and the tasks you had to hand over. Practice explaining how you told the rest of the team, what you checked at the end of the shift and what the incoming nurse still needed to know.
